During the month of March Swindon photographer Josie Williams (LMPA) stages a creative photographic exhibition at The Arts Centre, Devizes Rd, Swindon. Josie is a long established photographer with a career spanning over 25 years in both the creative arts and press. During that time she has had many solo exhibitions most famously the Wiltshire Hall Of Fame, featuring celebrities who lived or were born in the county. Her other notable exhibition was The Light Fantastic which features photographs of the M4 at night time, but captured in such a way as to take the images to another dimension of creative swirls of light and alien destinations. In recent years her role has been to inspire young minds, working as the Community Arts Development Officer at Commonweal School. In her job she photographs events and this is the main stay of her new work which makes up her new exhibition, ‘Now And Then.’ “ It has been some years since my last exhibition, but my creative gene is rising to the surface again and I hope people enjoy looking at some of my old stuff and also the new,” commented Josie. All photographs are on sale from the Box Office and can be viewed during the Arts Centre opening times, Mon – Fri 10am – 5pm or up to 10pm if there is a show, Sat 10 – 1pm or up to 10pm if there is a show.

Do you know the best way a painting, performance or building should be described to visually impaired people? Do you know the most effective way to assist a visually impaired person to feel a prop, costume or artwork? Are you familiar and confident with current legislation on the Disability Discrimination Act? Are you comfortable and acquainted with the language and terms that are requested by, and which acknowledge respect for, disabled people? If the answer to any of these questions is NO. You should consider increasing your skills with Touch & Audio Description Training. She has worked with major disability and arts organisations including Shape, Tate Modern, the Serpentine Gallery, The Icon Gallery and the Ambassador Theatre Group. “I have really enjoyed the training today and have gained a great deal of things to think about and to apply to the organisation. It all made a lot of sense and was very thought provoking.” (A Participant, 2006) “Really engaging session made me really passionate about going back to work and putting the things I have learnt into place.” (A Participant, 2008) The training session will be held on Wednesday 24 March at Pocklington Resource Centre, 1C Yukon Road, London SW12 9PZ at 10:00am to 5:00pm. Timeless classical songs will resonate at Swindon’s beautiful Christ Church for a truly community focused evening of entertainment this spring. The cream of Commonweal school’s music department will entertain with items they have practiced and polished during their extra- curricular clubs. This features Concert Band, Senior Choir, Chamber Choir, Junior Choir and a plethora of talented soloists. “Since January, all music ensembles have been busy rehearsing for our forthcoming Spring Concert on 24 March, which will be held at Christ Church, Cricklade Street, Old Town. The Concert Band is looking forward to performing their up-tempo marching band numbers, whilst the Senior Choir is making fantastic progress with the ‘Rhythm of Life’ in particular. The Junior Choir is coming on leaps and bounds, and is excited about the collaboration with the older singers and the Christ Church choir singing Rutter’s ‘I believe in Springtime’. There will also be some selected soloists performing with piano accompaniment. The students have shown a tremendous commitment and thoroughly enjoy performing, I am very proud of them,” commented Aniela Zylinski, the school’s music teacher who is organising the event along with the school’s community arts development officer, Josie Williams. The evening also features Christ Church choir who will be performing a joint piece with the young people. Twenty young drummers from Lethbridge Primary School will have the opportunity to perform a short rhythm they have learnt at their after school drum circle. “Commonweal School has a long tradition of performing in the community and has a good reputation for its output. This is a wonderful opportunity which came out of the fact that our school hall will be out of action for many months due to necessary upgrading, and as they say, the show must go on!” commented Josie Williams. “I can’t think of a better place to play except perhaps the Albert Hall,” she added in jest. Tickets are now on sale from the Finance Office, tel 01793 612727, at £3.50 each, and proceeds will be split between the School and the Church. The concert starts at 7pm. This year they are looking to expand this out even further by inviting any organisation, school, college or club to get in touch as there are a lot of ideas, activities and comics that can be supplied in different ways. What is “Free Comic Book Day?” As the name implies, Free Comic Book Day is a single day when participating comic book specialty shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their shops. When is Free Comic Book Day? Free Comic Book Day is held the first Saturday in May each year. Are they really free? Yep! Different shops have policies on how many free comics you can receive, but you will receive at least one free comic if you enter a participating shop location. Check with Swin City Comics for their policies and plans for FCBD. Is this the first Free Comic Book Day? No! The first Free Comic Book Day event was held in 2002. In the past, thousands of shops around the world have given away millions of free comic books to interested readers. Who’s involved in FCBD? Free Comic Book Day is administered by a panel representing all parts of the comic book industry: retailers, publishers, suppliers, and Diamond Comic Distributors.
