Born in 1968, I lived in Paris for thirty years, painting in and around the city. I started oil painting at the age of twelve. Two years later, I participated in my first group show and carried on ever since. Painting has been running in the family for several generations and seems to continue this way.
In 1997, I moved to Swindon (United Kingdom) and started to paint the scenery of Wiltshire. Being a foreigner helps keep a fresh outlook on the landscape, buildings and all the small details that make a Nation.
If I had to choose one sentence to depict my art, whatever medium I use, it would be «drawing with light». I bring the subject to life by tuning colours, tones and shapes. Lines emerge from the encounter of shades and lights, not the other way around. I like to paint quickly, free hand, to keep my work fresh and build a sound structure. Highlights and details are only added at a later stage to create the illusion of a more complex reality.
I paint with oil, watercolour and pastels, depending on the subject and the type of effect I want to achieve.

- Sitting on the dock of the bay - oil (50 x 60 cm) by Benoit Philippe

-
I chose the title of this painting in homage to Otis Redding whose “Sitting on the dock of the bay” is one of my favourite songs. I walked all the way to the end of Pier 7. It was early morning and I was alone, apart from some amateur fishermen. There was no fog, I was lucky; but the wind was strong. When I came back, I saw this man with his trolley. All his possessions were stacked on that trolley, secured with ropes. And he was watching San Francisco Bay, the light sparkling on the water, the boats and Bay Bridge in the background.
