Education Volunteers for Stonehenge and Old Sarum

In 2012 the visitor facilities at Stonehenge are changing. As part of the preparation process for the new Visitor Centre, we are looking for volunteers to take part in a pilot volunteering programme at Stonehenge and Old Sarum.

At Stonehenge, Volunteers will meet education groups arriving at the site, help the teacher to orientate around the site and give a 5-10 introductory talk before the teachers lead their own educational activities at the stones. Education groups visiting the site are of all ages and nationalities, although the majority are aged 13-16 years and come from schools in mainland Europe. Volunteers will have the opportunity to develop their talk in partnership with the education team and other volunteers.

At Old Sarum, Volunteers will support site staff in the delivery of ‘Invaders and Settlers at Old Sarum’ and interactive tour exploring the history of the site from the Iron Age to the medieval period. Tasks will include supervising of the movement of children around the site, preparing resources for each session and tidying at the end of each session, assisting site staff in the delivery of activities such as role play and archaeology handling and assisting the site team in evaluating the effectiveness of the session.

We are looking for volunteers who possess enthusiasm for working with people of all ages and nationalities, especially children and young people, are flexible and adaptable, have excellent communication skills and the ability to work in team with site staff and volunteers. We support the training and development of all volunteers and ask all volunteers to participate in training as required and, if requested, in the training of other volunteers. We reimburse reasonable travel expenses.

If you are interested in these opportunities, please contact me to register your interest and I will send you a registration pack and further information about the roles. My direct line telephone number is 0117 975 0720 or email rebecca.brough@english-heritage.org.uk

<ins>The Brief</ins>

This is an opportunity to make a contribution to the development of the relationship between the community and The Great Western Hospital.

The Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is holding (what is now an annual), event on the 8th of December this year (2010) starting at 7.00pm and finishing at 8.30, including refreshments, in Christchurch, Parish Church Old Town.

The event, which is now in its third year draws its audience from the breadth of the Swindon community and we are hoping to raise its profile year on year as the hospital continues to encourage closer links with the community. The contributors also see this as an opportunity to raise their own organisational profile.

We are hoping that this year’s programme will include a dramatic interpretation of the poem “T’was the Night Before Christmas” (see below), and this item should last for approximately 5 minutes and will be part of a general Christmas/Advent celebration including Christingles and other seasonal activity.

We invite Drama or other interested groups to tender for a slot in the programme.

We need response to this brief to be submitted by 1st May 2010

Please contact:
Stephen Henderson

T’was the Night before Christmas
Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

“Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!”

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer or would like to find out more please email boxoffice@swindon.gov.uk or call 01793 614837

Teenager Daniel Head became an Arts Centre volunteer in 2008. He says:

“I enjoy getting to watch shows and acts I’ve always heard about, but never really had the chance to see, such as comedians Stephen Merchant and Jason Manford. I also enjoy seeing acts that I would normally get to see, such as musicians and amateur dramatic groups.

“One of my highlights was finding out that Stephen Merchant, who co write The Office and Extras with Ricky Gervais, was coming to the Arts Centre. I have watched and admired his work since The Office started on BBC and since then have always wanted to see him do live stand up. I also enjoyed Mark Watson, the comedian, who has recently been on television programmes, such as Mock the Week and 8 out of 10 Cats.

“I enjoy my time at the Arts Centre and would recommend that anybody who enjoys any type of arts and culture to come and watch a show – or even volunteer!”
